Our Teaching English to Children Speakers of Other Languages (TECSOL) course prepares you with practical and theoretical knowledge to be qualified to teach children from 4-12 years of age. The course includes Cambridge Certification and two weeks of Work Experience Placement.

This course is suitable for students who already have an Intermediate Level of English or above and will provide them with the necessary knowledge, skills, and strategies to effectively teach English to children while also building their own English language skills to the next level.

Study Mode

Course Duration 7 weeks

Five weeks: Full-time study (20 hours per week).

Classes Monday to Friday 12:30pm to 4:50pm

Two weeks: Work experience in Childcare or Kindergarten Facility (25 Hours) per week.

Monday to Friday 9:00am to 3:00pm

What you will learn

We cover teaching methodologies and activities with an emphasis on communicative ability from an early age. Students will prepare and sit the Cambridge Teacher Knowledge Test – Young Learners Exam during week 5 of the course and receive a certificate on successful completion.

  • Cambridge Certification: A Cambridge qualification is recognised globally as the quality standard for teachers of all experience levels. All students will sit the Cambridge Teacher Knowledge Test Young Learners (YL) exam in week 5. The exam will test student knowledge of concepts related to young learners and the development of young learners from a teaching perspective, including the planning, teaching and assessment of young learners’ work.
  • Real Work Experience: Students will receive work experience placement as a teacher’s assistant in a local Childcare Centre or Kindergarten. Students who complete their work experience will receive a Certificate of Recognition from their employer.
  • Work experience: 25 hours per week (50 hours in total).

English language requirements for Intermediate Level English speakers:

  • Successful completion of International House Sydney Intermediate level of General English

For students with an official English level test score, please provide proof of:

  • General IELTS 4.5 or Academic IELTS 4.0 in all skills
  • TOEIC 500 – 600
  • TOEFL PBT 400, TOEFL CBT 97, TOEFL IBT 32
  • Cambridge PET
  • JETP/EIKEN 2

Students with official English level test scores may also have to complete a short telephone or in-school speaking test, approximately 10 minutes.
