What is the J-SHINE Course?

J-SHINE CRICOS Code: 053722E

This full-time 6-week course is accredited by J-SHINE and NEAS and is taught by both native English speaking and Japanese trainers. It prepares participants to teach English to children. The students will gain the J-SHINE qualification that will assist them in finding work as Assistant English Language Teachers in Japanese Government Primary Schools. Graduates may also choose to teach English in private language schools and pre-schools throughout Japan.

The J-SHINE course is available to native Japanese speakers who have an Intermediate English level. It will develop the English language skills of the student and introduce teaching methodology and activities for teaching younger learners. Micro teaching and observation are also key aspects of this course.

  • Work experience as a teacher’s assistant in a Sydney pre-school


There is no final examination.

You will be assessed on your:

  • Overall performance in classroom activities
  • Teaching practice
  • Presentations

Certification & Recognition:

Certificate is issued by International House Sydney and J-SHINE.

  • Completion of IH Sydney Intermediate Class
  • General 4.5 or Academic IELTS 4.0 in all skills
  • TOEIC 500
  • Cambridge PET

Students with official English level test scores may also have to complete a short telephone or in-school speaking. Those without official scores will be required to take a test at IH Sydney.
